I guess they are real ...... all 203 series ones

Isn't an IP address related to a host rather than an interface
or is there more jiggery pokery to it than that ??

yeah ..... thats the general idea. I have more stuff I would like to do
in the future, but the object of the immediate exercise is simply to get
the Windows hosts to browse, send / receive email etc

ppp0 uses 203.3.126.129 (not certain about subnet for that) and eth0
uses 203.3.126.129 / subnet 255.255.255.248. Both ppp0 & eth0 are on the
gateway box running Mandrake 6 (this one)

I can ping both outside and inside IP addresses from this box now.
Redhat has a GUI network configurator ... maybe thats what you mean.
Whats the "echo" command all about ??

Well I sorta know the commands but like everything in *nix the
explanations
in the documentation leave an awful lot unexplained
