I found the problem!  I had been looking at the S/Linux project page 
for a solution, and it hadn't occurred to me to read the RedHat 
Errata page.  Turns out there's a bug in one of the X11R6.1 packages.

That'll teach me to write to the list before putting my brain into 
gear  :)
