[H-GEN] xdm (again)

I sent this question out the other day, but since no one answered I
put it down to the time of year and am re-posting. Unfortunately I
lost the original post, so I have to try and remember what I wrote
last week...

The hassle is with xdm. While X works quite well (by using startx) I
am unable to use xdm. Whenever I try to login using xdm I am told
"Incorrect Login". This is the same regardless of who I try to log
in as (root or otherwise). It also makes no difference whether I am
loging in from the console or a remote X-server. David M suggested
it could be related to shadow passwords not working correctly (as
there is a problem changing passwords using "passwd" - the X user
configurator works correctly though. Weird...), but it makes no
difference whether I'm using /etc/shadow or /etc/passwd.

Of course, this makes no difference to running a local X-server (i.e.
by using startx) but it means that we can't run X programs on this
box remotely.

The box is running a _very_ standard RedHat installation on a
sparcstation2. An identical setup on my PC works fine and I'm
running out of ideas.

Even if no-one out there has any idea (and _that_ seems just a little
far-fetched :) then any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA
Paul
