No you don't need to re-compile the source. There are two configuration
files that allow you to specify the drives, access privileges, etc

/etc/AppleVolumes.system          // for users
/etc/AppleVolumes.default         // for guests

an example entry would be

/tmp Scratch
/home/ftp/pub "Public Area"

would appear to the mac as volumes Scratch and Public Area.

with the atalk deamons running you should be able to already see the unix
machine as an apple server under localtalk, it just will not have any
volumes attach.

Once you have configure your filesystems (and printer if you need to) they
should appear under the chooser when selecting the server on you machine.
