I had a similar problem when setting up a friends machine. It may be that
on the phone you hook it up to, it has a slow connection to exchange or
whatever, so it takes a little longer for your phone to get a dialtone.
(eg. pick up handset, wait a sec, and theres the dialtone). This may be
the reason, the modem is trying to autodetect a dialtone, and isn't
finding one, so it gives up. i THINK the command you have to use (consult
your manual) is AT X0 to turn off the autodetect.
