What do you mean by "swallowing my dial".
If you mean that you get a modem error saying "no dialtone", then you are 
correct, it is a difference between the US and Aus dial tones.  The US 
modems will NOT detect our dial tone.  To overcome this problem, you need 
to use the ATXn (call progress control) command.  A value for n of 0,1 or 2 
would probably work, although a look at the manual for the specific modem 
is normally worthwhile.

If you mean something else, then I have absolutely no idea what the problem 
could be. (without trying to sound condescending, one thing worth checking 
is that you have the line plugged into the correct socket, some modems 
disconnect the phone socket when they go off hook)
