        hi folks

    seems like an opportune moment to introduce myself.. 'nuff lurking
in dark corners..!

    like michael & sid, i'm also learning to throw off the shackles of
TrapDoors95.. been running linux since early august when i lashed out on
'using linux (special edition)'.. after installing caldera's openlite
'cos it has their lg desktop 90-day crippleware (old habits die hard..),
i've since been swamping the remaining grey matter with it's full share
of Hacker's Truth.. rather pleased with myself too; after running up
samba over a couple of days, i even managed to get 'normal' output from
our bjc4100 hangin' off the Winge box.. nice to be able to take the LUG,
SAG & NAG to bed to read, 'stead o' flipping thru' page by page
on-line..

    anyway, my one remaining (& constant since i bought the thing)
problem is a spirit viper 28.8 fax/data modem (hi michael!).. for
reasons beyond my ken, this little critter has been swallowing my dial
tone every time i hook it up.. if there's an obvious reason in the
factory default settings, then i can't seem to spot it.. the one clue i
_may_ have is that it returns a u.s. country code.. are there variations
in line impedance or similar between countries? makes no diff.
with/without the handset attached, & very occasionally i get a dialtone
(very briefly), at least long enough to attempt a dialout (singular-
haven't achieved two in a row yet..). cable fault is unlikely, i've
tried two or three models; line has been functioning perfectly with a
creative 28.8 internal in the Winge box since aug. last year.. just
quietly, i'm rather pissed off with the spirit..

        copious warm fuzzies to any & all with advice to offer (and yes,
i'm quite used to having my blinding stupidity illuminated to the
world.. embarrassed? my whole life is painted red!).
