Hi Robert,

Thanks for that - I needed a smack in the head for **not** doing a "su
root" before trying these...  I did try earlier, but as me, not root.

Unfortunately, the Aureal Vortex 1 (AU8820 chipset) is not supported. 
But now I have a working wheel - WOOHOO - although I was sure I selected
that during the original install.  Now all I need to do is to get a
Creative sound card (yuk) and get the fwd/back buttons working in
Netscape/Mozilla, and I'll be a happy chappy.
