I know what you mean & feel the same way about a lot of things. My 2c
worth: I have less knowledge of *nix than you & I too certainly have
*nix & non-*nix learning & relearning demands which far exceed the time
I have in this and the next lifetime (estimated). 

I found FreeBSD CVS a piece of p--s..., something that could be done
regularly once a week with me not even in attendance but engaged in more
worthwhile pursuits like mowing the grass...(!?) having a beer or three
(better). Connect to the net, change directories, type in one short
command to update your version source, walk away... check back a while
later, one short command to update your ports... check back a while
later, disconnect from the net (optional), one command to make the
world, walk away... check back a while later and you're current. 

And that's doing it the hard way. So that's 5/6 total commands. Updating
individual apps once you've done the above is 2 commands plus connecting
to the net & changing directories.

Not too hard. And Linux apps-compatibility as well.
