Hhmmm ...  Ineresting range of opinions and ideas out there.

A couple of points;

I do not know how to use CVS, and quite frankly have no interest in learning 
- I struggle enough learning and keeping up with what I do need to know.
(In the unlikely event I decide to do programming again, this may change.)

There appears to be sufficient interest for an independant person (Jason 
maybe?) to set up and maintain an unofficial CVS repository for the Linux 
kernel source.

My 2c worth.
