It doesn't have to be, no; but on the other hand it's marvellous for
doing all sorts of complicated and tricky things.
Most notably developers can work concurrently and have the master
copies of files locked at commit-time, not at edit-time.
Next best, it's possible to use `branches', whereby there can be two
(or any number of) forks of the project (a stable bugfix-only branch
and a developer's branch for further work, for example).
It's also possible to ask for versions of a file or project as they
existed on a given date and time, see annotated sourcefiles showing
who wrote which line of code, and so on.
