I have been asked to do a RH7.1 install for a department here at QUT on
an old Compaq Prolient 1500 server they were planning to send to auction.
I have tried to perform a simple install from the APC CD and from boot
floppies with no success.
The CD attempt fails in that it can't 'see' the CD even if I set the
BIOS to look at the CD 1st. (It comes up with the "Non-system disk or disk
error") I can even tried the Compaq 'Smart Start' CD v4.9 with no better
success - the Smart Start boots fine but the Aust. PC RH7.1 install CD
won't boot. I've used the same CD to install to several other boxes with
no problems. I tried using the W2K Install CD instead and it loads and
starts the install o.k.
If I try using a Linux boot floppy, or a DOS boot floppy and try to run
the CD based 'Autoboot' install I get a 'Not enough System Memory to
install Redhat' error message.
I have tried several images from the CD and BUGZILLA and tried several
flavours from the initial install screen. I then tried the 'loadlin'
utility in the dosutils folder and attempted a force of the RAM value to
176MB (it is a single 100MHz processor box with 176MB RAM).
I scanned the Linux site and Bugzilla with no success. I'm very close
to return to the original idea of sending the ol' boy to auction and find a
spare desktop to use until we can afford another server.
I copied down the RH71 install from the QUT FTP mirror (which mirrors
the AARNET mirror) and ran a disk compare and found only the RPM folder on
the mirror site had some new stuff in it.
If anyone has any ideas about either the CD boot problem (why can
Compaq and MS's CDs boot but not Linux?) or the boot from floppy memory
issue I'd really appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Ken Thomason
