I'll agree with Ben here -- lpd is evil. That said, I've managed to get
lprng set up rather nicely with magicfilter, although it did take a
little fiddling; and just recently I installed CUPS on a whim. I'm
pretty impressed by the web interface. It really does become a matter
of having the right driver packages installed, then click a few things
according to your printer description and it works. Even my boss could
install and manage one of these things.
The major inspiration for my switch to CUPS was a combination of KDE
gently nagging that it be installed (even though I don't actually use
KDE), and the fact that it had the Highly Magical gimpprint drivers
available as a bundle, for high quality printing to my Stylus Color.
I remember getting printing from a Windows machine to a Linux-connected
printer working before with some strange printcap stuff. I'm pretty
sure there's a HOWTO or two at least, and CUPS has some interesting
stuff to do with samba I'm yet to investigate. If you really need it, I
can probably dig out the relevant configuration files.
In short, if you can get away with not running lpd, do so. Your sanity
may remain intact a little longer.
