[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and ]
[ Unix-related topics. Please observe the list's charter. ]
[ Worthwhile understanding: http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html ]
Hi All,
I've just switched over to Debian and I must say that it is fantastic.
I've gone wild and have started to convert all my boxes on my LAN to
debain and it has been nothing but pleasurable.
In fact it has been so good, that I've branched out and tried setting up
new features for the network. One feature that hasn't been entirely
successful thus far is setting up a print server. I installed apsfilter,
which made configuration of the printer painless. Print test was correct
first go. But now it appears that lpd isn't doing its job. I've sent
print jobs to the server via samba. The files show up in the spool
directory (/var/spool/lpd/remote or /var/spool/lpd/lp or
/var/spool/lpd/stcolor-raw or ... I've tried them ALL) but then they
just sit there. I can "cp /var/spool/lpd/remote/print-file /dev/lp0" and
the proper document slowly pops out of the printer. But lpd seems to be
asleep. I've HUP'ed lpd and bounced the file server, all to no avail.
Could someone please point out the glarily obvious thing that is staring
me in the face that I have been uable to see and probably will discover
for myself, but only just after someone has hit the send button on a
message that explains it all.
Regards,
Doug
