[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and ]
[ Unix-related topics. Please observe the list's charter. ]
[ Worthwhile understanding: http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html ]
I know there are probably heaps of good sites out there, and if I
just used google I'd find one, but what I'd actually like is a site that
someone's used, and found very informative and helpful as to how to go
about securing a Linux box. Reason I ask, is (as the sig says) I work on a
helpdesk and we're looking towards supporting linux dialup to start with,
and then maybe the very basics of linux applications (those more commonly
found, that is, rather than the huge number that are available for
everything). As the only person in my workplace that has any experience
whatsoeva with unix let alone linux, it's fallen to me to install a duel
boot (debian and Redhat, redhat because it's what QUT uses on their systems
especially within FIT, and Debian due to this being my choice of distro and
therefore the one I'm most comfortable with) linux box.
It's also fallen on my head to make sure the linux box is kept
secure. So what I'd really like is a website or two that have instructions,
on not necessarily how to use this or that tool to secure a system, but
where I need to start (and hopefully finish ;) to secure the linux box
properly. I know basics about how to secure a box using tcp wrappers and
the like, but I'm guessing that my knowledge is not nearly enough to truly
secure the box.
There is a site called www.linuxsecurity.org , I have not used it for a
long while but it is devoted to security and last time I looked had
tutorials/how-tos etc. Might be worth a look.
Somebody here was acontributor from memory.
