[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and ]
[ Unix-related topics. Please observe the list's charter. ]
[ Worthwhile understanding: http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html ]
UQSport provides a server for UQ clubs and socs to host websites
(http://clubs.uqsport.uq.edu.au) . For some inane reason this was a M$ (NT?)
machine, and even smarter still, they provided one ftp account to all the
clubs. (sharing username/password.) Needless to say this caused problems and
the box has been down for the last month, just back online recently. (second
time this year, probably a result of the worms targetting MS products.) (now
running win2000 & IIS)
I'm thinking there must be some opportunity to 'do a deal' with UQSport and
the UQ Union clubs and socs to setup their box on linux, and co-locate the
club box. I suspect there are a few people here in humbug that work on campus
that are closer to the 'politics' and UQ IT policies than I am. Heck, humbug
might even get some 'funding' off UQSport / clubs and socs for adminning the
box. It should be a reasonably easy exercise to provide a mailing list
service (majordomo) for the clubs as a sweetener for clubs & socs. (ie: linux
can do more than a M$ system for less cost)
Anybody?
Matthew.
ps: I'm happy to do the apache configuration and basic admin, tho would
prefer someone with more experience look after security issues. (thinking of
this as a training/experience building exercise.)
