I may as well post my 2c worth (everyone else is).

I use the CLI tool ccrypt and a simple plain text ~/.passwd file which I
keep encrypted
and only decrypt with ccrypt when adding to it, otherwise I use ccrypt -c
~/.passwd.cpt | grep "search string"
