OK - I took my laptop to a room with a data projector. I rebooted it and
when it was up and running (and logged in) I connected my laptop to a
vga projector that was ready to go. Pressing Fn-F8 did nothing (also
arandr didn't list the data projector). So I returned to my room
(without shutting it down) and put it in the docking station. The
external monitor did not start up - but I could use Fn-F8 this time to
display on the external monitor.
I am using Nouveau rather than the Nvidia driver because I was unable to
change resolution using the Nvidia driver.
Do I need to do something to xorg.conf?
