Thanks Russell!
It's been a long time since I was at a HUMBUG but I have very fond
memories of going to events at my first years at Uni - the first one I
had some awesome HUMBUG member (whose name I have unfortunately long
since forgotten) sit down with my for ages and help me create an X
config that would get it actually loading on my monitor. Some of you
might also know my colleague Tristan Mott who was with me on that
occasion and several others.
A quick background on Mammoth VPS - we focus heavily on automation and
self-service and as such we have been mostly offering an unmanaged
service (we've just started offering managed services for those
customers who don't want to deal with OS management, monitoring, etc).
We wrote our own management system which allows customers to do things
like rebooting, reinstalling the operating system, rescuing it from
console if you accidentally firewall yourself out, etc - all with zero
intervention from us.
(On the technical side, all our VPS hosts are running Linux and we're
using Xen for virtualisation. Our management system is written in
ASP.NET, but the web servers running it are Linux+mono, not the
traditional Windows environment.)
I've whipped up some discount codes if people are interested in having a
test run - just enter them in when signing up in the 'Referrer' field.
The VPS is created on the fly and you can get online in just a matter of
minutes.
HUMBUG1207A - 70% off for 1 month (15 of these available)
HUMBUG1207B - 50% off for 3 months (20 of these available)
The basic Personal plan is $9.95/mo for Linux, so both codes will let
you have a test for only a few bucks a month. You can change
requirements at any time as well (e.g., if you decide you need double
the RAM, you can just change that setting, reboot, and it'll be
available instantly).
If you're just looking for a personal box for super-cheap you'll
definitely get a better deal buying from the US; we're trying as hard as
we can to keep pricing down though wherever we can to be as competitive
as possible.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me off list, or I'm
happy to answer anything else on-list. Definitely would love any
feedback about the service - we are keen to appeal to the casual
Linux-using crowd as much as possible!
Thanks for your time & thanks to Russell and HUMBUG for allowing this
shameless plug :)
