[H-GEN] External Hard Drives

Thanks.

WD's unlock program won't run on Ubuntu 11.10. It's certainly not plug and play - the unlock.exe simply opens qBitorrent and doesn't download anything to run; nor do any other applications appear to run it. Maybe there's a simple solution that I don't know... From what I can see WD is not good with Linux if you want to maintain encryption.

I ask the question because non of the brands claim to run on a Linux distribution (not surprisingly), nor can I fund up-to-date info in forums.

I don't need portable, but that's not important. I will need to run it on both Linux and Windows. Powered 1TBs go for $100. Ease of use matters more than encryption to me (if encryption is for security).

Yours,

Simon

All of them should be "compatible". They are just regular HDs formatted with some Win FS.
If you are NEVER sharing them with Windows/OSX then you can reformat them with any
of the Linux file systems (ext3/ext4/whatever).

If all you want is a single TB then I would recommend one of the 2.5" USB3 babies.
If you don't have any USB3 ports now they will work happily on USB2. Once you move
to USB3 they will fly. A USB3 PCI express card for a desktop/tower is only $20.

I have a couple of the "Western Digital Elements Portable 1TB 2.5 HDD USB3" that you
will find on the Umart site for $130. Never had a problem with them. They self-power on
any USB2 or 3 port.

One thing to watch is the device end of the supplied cable. The PC end is always a standard
USB3 'A' connector (looks like and works in USB2, but has extra contacts). The WD drive
(and the Seagate one) have a modified MicroUSB connector at the other end.
One of these... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Connector_USB_3_IMGP6033_wp_.jpg

I find these the best as the wider section is a standard USB2 MicroUSB connector and you
can use the older standard USB2 cables to connect the device at USB2 speeds.
