I took them out. The disks were SATA. I tested the disks in a USB caddy and I know that the USB caddy works.

Were the servers SCSI or also IDE?
Since the servers had a hardware RAID controller and 2 HDs, you could also try just disassembling the RAID array: disable RAID in BIOS, and use each disk separately - see if that works out. It could also be the controller - try other port as well. Perhaps both HDs will work!
I do have a few old IDE HDs lying around, should you end up short.
