This was true in the past, but I really don't think it's true of modern 
Ubuntu. I have boxes with ATI, Intel and nVidia graphics and Ubuntu 10.x 
has just worked out of the box on those machines. (This is less true of 
other distros, e.g., Debian. But with a bit of Googling and Humbug 
hand-holding I've solved issues with Debian on all my current machines.)
