If you are new to Linux there is one big gotcha as far as I am concerned 
- i.e. graphics cards.
In the past I have had machines with ATI cards and they haven't played 
well with Linux.
These days I make sure the machine I want to buy has an nVidia card. ATI 
has probably been getting better over the years but I have had too many 
average experiences to go back anytime soon.
On-board Intel graphics seem OK in my limited experience.
