end-to-end encryption though a pair of devices, and the HDMI crack breaks
how the session keys are built. However, without hardware, the crack is
useless. Somebody would have to design and build a black box to do the job.
However, Intel is smart: the DMCA and similar laws around the world make
creating and selling circumvention devices illegal except for certain very
specific situations, so even if the system was cracked (only a matter of
time), they have big legal guns to legally shoot down anybody who tries to
design or sell hardware or hardware plans for stripping the crypto off
encrypted HDMI connections. I'm sure it won't stop hardcore video pirates
who have the resources to build their own hardware or source them illegally,
but for the average Joe, he won't be able to buy a black box any time soon.
The ultimate solution for getting cable TV into a DVR (say) will be
something like the ill-fated CableCARD and its followon standards. Watch
Google TV closely here, because they're using a followon for CableCARD,
which is some kind of local networking standard for pulling media into a
single box.
Cheers, Ben.
