[H-GEN] Transcoding video from crappy point-and-shoot cameras

Hello all,
I have an el-cheapo Canon A720, which I've been using to take lots of
pictures and shoot a bit of poor-quality video on my holidays.
Now I've determined that the camera is writing the videos in AVI format,
with the video stream encoded in Motion JPEG format. So the videos, AFAICT,
are getting written out in a lossy format, and worse, aren't even being
compressed very well.
I'd like to save some space, so I'd like to transcode the video into
something that'll take up less space, but maintain as much quality as
possible. Does anybody have any practical experience and advice for
transcoding videos from one lossy format to another to save space?
Furthermore, does anybody know of a way to 'rotate' videos 90 degrees?
Ideally, without having to re-encode the video, or fiddle around with video
editing tools if at all possible.
I'm on a Mac, and use Open Source tools.
Cheers, Ben.
