Most recently I used a '3' branded E160 on my laptop which was running
Fedora 10.

The procedure for getting it working was this:

1) Plug in the USB device.
2) Click on the 'Network Manager' icon in the tasktray.
3) Click the Menu option titled '3G'.

As far as I know, this required Network Manager >= 0.7.0, which seemed
to be in Intrepid Ipex (Ubuntu 8.10).
