That little ramble sparked a thought. I recall at last(?) O'Week
Microsoft handed out free but time bombed copies of MS Office
2007, presumably with the Student Union's blessing and presumably
with lots of shiny paper work. I recall it because it irritated
me at the time - as their real goal was probably to get the
students to start submitting Office 2007 documents to the Uni
markers, who were at the time trying desperately not to fork out
the money to upgrade.
In any case - who says we can't play the same game? Put together
an Open Source CD, branded with Humbug's logo, with the sort of
software on it Students might need for their studies - Open Office,
Gimp, Firefox plugings (say for ripping Flash video streams),
Wesnoth - that sort of thing.
Put something on the CD along the lines of "Having trouble with
this stuff or any other open source software? Come along to
Queenslands open source software club, Humbug and speak with the
experts for fee. We meet on the UQ Campus every second week."
Right now I see it as a boots and all activity we put together at
a meeting. That is we collect the software, buy a swag of
printable, burnable CD's, and and print 'em and burn 'em ourselves
at a meeting. Everyone has to bring a burner. (Greg has to buy
a portable one for his toy laptop.)
Sound doable?
