Yeah, I think I had been attending for about 3 years with my x86
Solaris system before I tried my first Linux installation.
Back in those days you could get free software to run on Solaris, but
it often needed tweaking, and free (or even BSD-licensed) software was
basically unheard of for Windows. It's still not all that common,
though it does exist (most evidently in the form of Firefox and the
other Mozilla projects).
