[H-GEN] the mail lists and what I'm meant to subscribe to

I have a few questions about the mailing lists.

I vaguely recall ( or perhaps my memory is completely fabricated) that
as a member, I had to subscribe to announce and general with the other
lists being optional.

Questions as follows:
a) is it still a requirement that members must subscribe to announce?
b) is there a way for me to find out what lists I used to be
subscribed to with my other email address/es ? (I changed my email
address for general, and I also suspect I may have had a different
address from years ago to when I rejoined just this membership year)
c) -are- announce and general mandatory subscriptions? or is announce
the only mandatoy one?
d) and after greg's mention about top posting (or not) could someone
point me to the email or article that tells us which we're meant to
do? I recall an email / article that tells us we should (or shouldn't)
top post and why etc. (and I'll stick it on the wiki somewhere too!)
