Of course, in my hurry typing my post yesterday I forgot to add a proper 
thanks for the suggestions. Thanks! It gave me a good idea of where to 
look to fix the problem, which was great.

Now if the futex bug that keeps killing iceweasel would go away, 
everything would be working nicely on this machine... :-)
