In case anybody was wondering how this story ended, here's an update.

A few people suggested that the USB device would probably present itself
as a keyboard, so I went ahead and ordered it. Since it arrived, I've
tested it on my Powerbook under OSX Tiger and Ubuntu Feisty and on a few
i386 and AMD64 desktop boxes running FreeBSD and it has just worked on
everything.
Cheers, Greg
