As far as I am aware, motherboard raid controllers are what are known
as "Hardware Assisted" RAID controllers. A significant amount of work
is done in software.

Disks are a point of failure, but so is the motherboard and so is the
raid controller.

I would recommend a much simpler approach. Use multiple disks,  and
rsync periodically to a disk which you don't keep mounted.

Remember kids, RAID isn't backup.
