I run Debian stable on my laptop, and on our 1850 PowerEdge
servers here.  The laptop has SATA2 I think - it didn't work
with 2.6.8 anyway.  I have backported various kernels and 
packages to make this all work.  You can find the backported
packages here:

Can't help you with VMWare I am afraid.  But one piece of
advice: if you don't need full vitalisation, then use
vserver or something similar instead.  See the 2nd comment
