You need to be a bit careful with USB-serial dongles, and may have to shop
around to find one that will work for your particular purposes.
While working on an industrial control system in 2004, I tried several
USB-RS232 converters that did simple serial comms correctly, but failed when
flow control or hardware handshaking was required. I also found one that
failed at low bit rates (e.g. 9600bps), but worked at high rates (e.g.
115200bps).
