I attended a Linux conference at UQ some years ago (was it 2001?).   
The dinner then was held at the Convention Centre.  They seemed to do  
a decent job of it, and should easily manage that number.  You may  
want to ask them again?

I can't recall who was involved in organizing the conference, though  
I know it included several HUMBUG members.  The MC at the dinner was  
Jason Parker (who did a great job, as I recall).
