Hi.
Previously we have been used as a dumping ground for old and useless
equipment and volunteers have given their own time and money to collect some
of these machines.
To be fair to Linux and people's expectations, particularly when comparing
Linux to MS Windows, after much discussion Computerbank QLD decided to set a
minimum acceptable donation level of 700 MHz PIII's for machines to be
useful and practical with current versions of Linux with GUI (generally KDE
or GNOME).
Currently most of the donated machines are of lower specs. so we do what we
can. Lower spec. machines which work but are not really useful to us are
given to other organisations for reuse instead of being dumped. One such
project is a donation to a school in the Solomon Islands.
So lesser spec. but working machines are put to good use.
Apart from donations to needy individuals, our projects have included
schools (Ubuntu Linux Lab), PCYC's, aged care home and other community
groups.
We have not seen many donations this year as our corporate donors went
through their hardware refresh last year and the year before.
Donations for CBQ may be made at
Career Employment Australia
29 Cambridge Street,
COORPAROO 4151.
This is we have use of premises and hold our workshops.
CBQ holds workshops to prepare machines and accept donations nominally 9 am
to 2 pm Saturday fortnightly, (by arrangement it is the alternate fortnight
to HUMBUG).
Thank you.
Regards,
Simon Ellis.
