This problem solved now.  I changed from dates to named directories,
using .../blog/misc for the testing posts and also changed some
variables to what they should be:

$datadir = "/var/www/troy/blog";
$url = "/troy/blog/index.cgi";

(I renamed blosxom.cgi to index.cgi for transparency)

Note I have changed this URL while testing to simplify paths:

http://piggo.dyndns.org/troy/blog/
