Hey, cool.. I use putty and that didn't work until I went into the putty
settings under Window/Translation and told it to assume rcvd data is UTF.
This also fixed some issues with various tools I use occasionally that use
line drawing characters (like pstree).  It's one of those itches that wasn't
bad enough for me to scratch.
