A formula that worked well at LUV (Linux Users of Victoria) was an intro
talk that people who were new to FOSS could relate to, and usually went
for about 30 min, followed by an in depth technical talk on a more
advanced topic (taking the better part of 90 min). Then people went for
dinner.
