I'm currently working with a commercial photographer. We just put together a
photo editing machine based on a Mac G5 with a film/slide scanner.
Her choice was a Nikon Coolscan LS-50. The supplier claimed it had been
discontinued and we settled on a Minolta DiMage 5400.
FWIW she tried one of those high end flatbeds with the filmstrip attachment
while we waited on the Minolta. She was far from impressed. From speaking to
other photographers though it seems the Coolscan LS-50 or 5000ED (I think
it's predecessor) is the scanner of choice for freelance commercial
photographers - although most are now making the move to digital.
