[H-GEN] ISP recommendations

Hi everyone,

I'm having to move house for the first time in 4 years. Back when I got
broadband, a month after moving, there weren't many choices and I went
with, and stuck with, bigpond cable. I stuck with it because, well lets
just say that a blind person doesn't need pictures and the Foxtel analogue
signal is still available for those who want it.

anyway, I have it on good authority that cable is not available in my new
home. I will check of course, but I got the impression that the previous
tenant had done their homework.

So I'm looking for ADSL recommendations. I like the look of Internode.
They've got the whole ADSL2+ thing going on, they are happy to support
Linux, and a few people I know give (or did) give them a good rap. I also
like the idea of not being held ransom to a particular telephone company in
order to get better prices, and I also like the look of their SOHO plans.

But I'm open to suggestions. Internode doesn't seem to have any kind of
deal for getting their hardware, so if I went with them, I'd either have to
buy some from them or somewhere else. And I really could do with not
spending a lot of money. But I will if it's the way to get best service.

I currently have AAPT as our telephone provider, but their ADSL plans don't
allow for use of servers so I'm avoiding them.

I'd be interested in any thoughts people have about specific ISPs, and also
about ADSL in general since I've never used it. Do I have to have a voice
line at all, for example? Since I'm not with Telstra, can my current telco
organise a connection or do I have to deal with Telstra first then switch?

Any advice of any sort would be helpful.

Geoff.
