Depending on the package you have you are most likely to have only one
IP address assigned to your account which would pe applied to the
outside interface of the modem. If you want to apply that IP to smoothie
then you need to look at setting the modem up as a bridge. Note that
smoothie will now need to do every thing that the modem does/did like
DHCP, NAT, firewalling, ((PPPoE?) authentication etc. AFAIR there was
something on http://www.ozcableguy.com/ on how to do this with an
alcatel. Update: see http://www.ozcableguy.com/alcatel.html
Also, before you bridge it, you might want to check if your modem can
act as a VPN end point.
I'm sure there's a few othe points to consider but this should get you
going.
