Another option to investigate is nearline backups. That is, dump to a 
local large disk, and then write that dump to tape in your spare time. 
It means you have a recent backup on disk for fast access and an offline 
backup for business continuance or longer term storage.

I agree with Greg here. You do need to assess how exactly you approach 
your backups and how frequently you need to do a restore. Replacing dump 
(which has known corner cases on Linux for backing up ext2/3)  might be 
a good idea.
