I've had moderate success recently in downloading some Windows Media
streams.  The program I used was "asfrecorder", and it grokked "mms://"
URLs (URIs?).  I think <http://sourceforge.net/projects/asfrecorder/> is it.

Some of the WM9 feeds confuse it a bit, although I was able to stream them
using MPlayer.  I can't recall whether VLC was also up to the task, or
whether I tried using it.

I haven't looked at any stuff from Real, although perhaps that helps.  Also,
for the sake of completeness, I should say I am using OS X, not Linux,
although I think that's a distinction without a difference here.
