The sendmail that ships with RedHat 9 is already built with milter
support. In fact, it ships with a lot of stuff built in so the need to
recompile sendmail is largely avoided. It's just a pity that is such a
pain in the arse to configure and use sendmail compared to some
others...

You can find out what sendmail has been compiled to support thusly:

dlg at host dlg$ echo | /usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail -d0
Version 8.12.8
Compiled with: DNSMAP HESIOD HES_GETMAILHOST LDAPMAP LOG MAP_REGEX
                MATCHGECOS MILTER MIME7TO8 MIME8TO7 NAMED_BIND NETINET
NETINET6
NETUNIX NEWDB NIS PIPELINING SASL SCANF STARTTLS
TCPWRAPPERS
                USERDB USE_LDAP_INIT
[snipped output]

see MILTER in there?

I would recommend looking at mimedefang (http://www.mimedefang.org) as a
milter wrapping spamassassin and any virus scanners you care to put in.
Once you get your head around it it's extremely flexible and effective.
There are srpms available at http://dag.wieers.com/packages/mimedefang/,
but I can't vouch for them since I don't use mimedefang on RedHat.

As for starting an MTA flamewar, I'd rather not do that either, apart
from saying that I don't find sendmail to be a slouch in the MTA arena
and it works great once you know what you're doing with it. However,
sendmail's learning curve compared to something like postfix or exim is
way steeper.

Each to their own.

DG
