I always recommend the HP LaserJet 1200.  These days you can get
scanner and paper tray add-ons, they work great, and come with a
little diagram in the manual to tell you *exactly* what the
blinkenlights on the front mean (there are only three, or four, and
one is a "fix this" button).  It has built-in PostScript support (yes
I know not everyone thinks that's great.  I do.).

It's the best printer I have ever dealt with, bar none.
