I've found /etc/hosts files to be a poor solution in most if not all
situations. Even in home networks I encourage the use of dns. In any
case I'm not sure Ewan was talking about a home network.

Search directive yes. Love 'em.
I will continue to respectively disagree with the idea of using an
/etc/hosts file to work around an apparent problem with dns. Fix the dns
problem and keep your blood pressure down in the future :)

I've always seen this use of NIS a bit like a poor dns. No MXs, none of
the other sophistication of dns.
