While this was certainly necessary in "the olden days", it no longer
appears to be. My understanding is that the cable you refer to provided
direct analogue audio from the cdrom drive to the sound-card. These days
the sound is most likely going to be passed via the CPU, and as I
understand it that data flows in a digital form down the ide cable. If
you "rip" in analogue mode that cable is required. If you do so in
digital mode, I believe it is not.
