I'm really not much of a hardware person at all, but these errors look
much more like a misconfiguration rather than a permissions problem to
me.

Do you really have a SCSI CD player? If so, the following might not be
that helpful. When the kernel detects my IDE CD rom it helpfully logs:

Jun 12 15:35:06 localhost kernel: hdc: attached ide-cdrom driver.
Jun 12 15:35:06 localhost kernel: hdc: ATAPI 40X CD-ROM drive, 128kB
Cache, DMA
Jun 12 15:35:06 localhost kernel: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12

Which shows me that my cd rom is attached to /dev/hdc. Does your scsi
setup do something equally useful?

And, to the best of my knowledge, you will need a dinky little cable
to connect your cdrom drive to your sound card.
