Then don't waste time or effort on it.
Seriously, if it wasn't worth backing up, it's not worth any
more grief.
One issue that can happen when you start mucking around with dud
disks in otherwise good systems is that you can confuse either
yourself or your OS and end up doing brand new damage.
Just to put this in context, I've wasted the entire day chasing
data off the disk in my wife's box -- and have now given up.
Its symptoms were such that it seemed worth a bit of effort: it
would boot sometimes; it would mount some partitions, but not
always the same ones; but it would never mount the partition
with the data that would have been nice to capture (email that
arrived from her clients after the last successful backup).
Naturally, the disk failed during last night's backup.
